Meta

Meta – “above.” Metacognition is the ability to observe your own thoughts. The overminds at work.

Close your eyes – what’s behind you? A projector from which your life pours out. It emits ready-to-use content: emotions, words, actions. The brain makes a decision before you know about it – you’re just shown subtitles from the projection booth. Once you notice how you think, you start peeling away from the screen. Before that, you’re not even a viewer – the screen is you. You’re not watching the film, you’re screening it, while thinking you’re the director.

Thoughts come and go on their own. You don’t create them. Judgments, opinions, intentions – everything flows through you into the world in a continuous stream, produced by themselves. You are the one who can observe it. And not participate. Then the stream begins to clear.

The moment you stop deciding – autopilot kicks in. And everything is predetermined. Parents wanted, society expected, ads showed. You mistake automatisms for your own desires. Other people’s scripts for your own life. In this sleep it seems like you’re awake.

This is the default mode of reality. Level-one life. Stimulus – response. Human-machine.

Meta-life begins with the question: is this actually mine? The things that repeat every day, that everyone around does, that happen by themselves – woke up, went to the bathroom, brushed teeth, ate, got to work… – just background noise, none of it is really happening.

Are these my decisions? Are these my relationships? Are these my goals?

The answers can be uncomfortable. Especially when you’ve been avoiding these questions, and suddenly you see you’ve been following a route you never mapped – just agreed to.

And then you see the current of life, see where it’s going. And you start moving with the flow.

You see your thoughts. You see your automatisms. In the depths of consciousness, behind the thoughts, behind the reflexes, behind the body – the one who observes it all. Who is watching all of this?

It’s not a thought. Thought is what’s being observed. It’s not an emotion. It’s not the body. It’s not the personality. If thoughts are clouds, then you are the sky. Remove them – and what remains?

The light of awareness. Consciousness without content.

You are not your thoughts, not your habits. All of them can be un-thought and reconsidered. You are the one sitting inside your character, looking through them.

And each level takes you further from the screen and closer to the source of consciousness. From the character – to the one who’s playing it.

Meta – “above.” What level are you on?
