The game
People are used to thinking of themselves as separate individuals, disconnected from the surrounding universe. This illusion prevents them from recognizing their true nature: we are an inseparable part of the world, like waves on the surface of the ocean.
Lila (Sanskrit) — the cosmic play of God. Spontaneous pastime, no purpose other than enjoyment.
We play a game where we pretend to be separate beings with our own desires, fears, and goals. Society imposes its rules, expectations, norms on us. Distracting us from realizing our connection with the world. We live playing the game of separation.
In Hinduism, the whole world is a game. Imagine the universe as a conscious being that plays with itself, dividing into many forms and entities (people, animals, stars, etc.) to experience diversity. It’s a game for the sake of the game, there is no winner. A creative process where whatever happens is the goal. The experience itself.
Opposites are only an appearance. Good and evil, life and death, self and others — like sides of a coin, they don’t exist on their own. Cells in a body, threads in fabric, or drops in a river. No matter how much we consider ourselves independent, we are part of something greater.
The universe, including ourselves, participates in a grand spectacle. All the roles, conflicts, and events are manifestations of a unified whole. We are deceived by this game, taking it seriously. Actors who forgot they’re playing roles, perceiving the spectacle as reality.
You can stop this by seeing the game itself. By ceasing to take the illusion of separateness too seriously. Not by renouncing life, but by embracing it with lightness and joy.
You and the universe are one and the same. You don’t stand against the world — you are part of it.
