The game
People are used to seeing themselves as separate individuals, disconnected from the surrounding universe. This illusion prevents them from recognizing their true nature: we are an inseparable part of the world, like waves on the surface of the ocean.
Lila (Sanskrit) – the cosmic play of God. Spontaneous pastime with no purpose other than enjoyment.
We’re playing a game where we pretend to be separate beings with our own desires, fears, and goals. Society imposes its rules, expectations, norms – distracting us from recognizing our connection with the world. We live playing the game of separation.
In Hinduism, the entire world is play. Imagine the universe as a conscious being that plays with itself, splitting into countless forms and entities (people, animals, stars, and so on) to experience variety. It’s play for play’s sake – there is no winner. A creative process in which whatever happens is the goal. The experience itself.
All oppositions are mere appearance. Good and evil, life and death, self and other – one cannot exist without the other. The sides of a coin don’t exist by themselves. Like cells in a body that think they’re independent, we cannot exist without each other.
The universe, including ourselves, participates in a grand spectacle. All the roles, conflicts, and events are expressions of a single whole. We are deceived by this game, taking it seriously. Actors who forgot they’re playing roles perceive the play as reality.
You can stop this by seeing the game itself. By ceasing to take the illusion of separateness too seriously. Not by rejecting life, but by embracing it with lightness and joy.
You and the universe are one and the same. You don’t stand against the world – you are part of it.
