Global Underground 007: New York
Paul Oakenfold’s second entry in the Global Underground series, released May 25, 1998 on the Boxed label. The set is drawn from a night at Marc Ballrooms in New York City, and it doubles as a snapshot of his Cream residency in Liverpool — several of the tracks were courtyard anthems he’d already been playing there for two years.
By 1998 Oakenfold was near the top of DJ Magazine’s Top 100 DJs poll, and this mix marked his return to the GU catalogue after the label’s breakout success. It reached number 12 on the UK Compilation Chart — trance and progressive house built for a room, not a chart, getting there anyway.
Two discs, about two and a half hours combined: CD1 leans trance and progressive house, CD2 drifts into breakbeat, drum and bass, and downtempo toward the end. AllMusic gave it 4 out of 5 stars.
