The Hymmapan Electron

The Hymmapan Electron is a Thai duo built around khaen (a bamboo mouth organ) and phin (a three-string lute), the core instruments of molam — the “master singer” music tradition of Isan, Thailand’s northeastern region. They call the mashup “Isan Cyber”: century-old melodies played on traditional instruments, laid over a techno pulse.

The project started in 2019 as Khontan & The Hymmapan Express, a full collective. In 2022 it narrowed down to an electronic duo — just khaen, phin, and production — and took the current name.

This session is part of Tuktuk Radio, a Bangkok channel that films DJs and live acts performing from a moving tuk-tuk, streets and traffic in the background instead of a club.
