The Art of Loving

An Inquiry into the Nature of Love

Love is not a feeling you fall into — it’s a skill you practice. It’s a verb, an active concern for the life and growth of what we love, and like any art it has to be learned.

Erich Fromm, a German-American psychoanalyst and social philosopher, wrote this book in 1956. He argues that love is not a passive feeling people “fall into” but an active capacity that has to be learned like any other skill — one that requires discipline, concentration, patience, and the will to see another person as they actually are, not as a projection of your own needs.
